Mbah, the incumbent governor, is seeking another term in office under the platform of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

The emergence of 14 challengers means voters in Enugu State will have several options to consider when the governorship election takes place in 2027.

Mbah Seeks Second Term

Governor Peter Mbah will be defending his position as he begins the race for another term in office.

The governor’s administration is expected to make its record in infrastructure development, government projects and social intervention programmes a major part of its campaign.

Edwin Alor is contesting under the Accord platform, while Professor Jehu Nnaji is the candidate of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP).

The Labour Party is represented by Okwudilichukwu Ugwu, while Nnamdi Ugwu is contesting under the Democratic Leadership Alliance (DLA).

Anthony Udeani of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) and Afamefuna Ani of the Action Peoples Party (APP) are also among the candidates.

The remaining contenders are Elvis Ugwoke of the Zenith Labour Party (ZLP), Friday Iloka of the Social Democratic Party (SDP), Nnamdi Omeje of the Action Democratic Party (ADP), Ken Ikeh of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM), and Obioma Nnamani of the Because Of Our Tomorrow (BOOT) Party.

A Crowded Political Contest

With 15 candidates in the race, the 2027 Enugu governorship election is shaping up as a multi-party contest.

The large number of candidates means political parties will have to work hard to mobilise supporters and convince voters ahead of the election.

Candidates are expected to engage political stakeholders, community leaders and other influential groups as campaigns and consultations gather momentum.

The contest could also produce intense discussions around the direction of Enugu State, particularly in areas such as infrastructure, education, healthcare, employment, security and economic development.

Opposition Parties Seek to Unseat Mbah

For the opposition candidates, the objective will be to convince voters that they can provide a different approach to governance.

The presence of candidates from several political parties gives voters multiple alternatives beyond the incumbent governor.

The PDP, which previously held the governorship in the state, is represented in the race by Uchenna Nnaji.

Other parties are also hoping to make an impact by presenting their candidates and policy positions to voters across the state.

However, the eventual strength of each candidate will depend on their ability to build support, organise effectively and connect with voters during the campaign period.

Mbah’s Campaign Strategy

Mbah is expected to rely heavily on the performance of his administration as he seeks re-election.

His government has highlighted infrastructure projects and social intervention programmes as part of its achievements.

The governor and his supporters are expected to use these projects to make the case for another term.

The opposition, meanwhile, will likely scrutinise the administration’s record and present their own proposals for Enugu.

This could make governance performance one of the central issues during the campaign.

Political Activities Expected to Intensify

With the candidate list now displayed, political activities are expected to increase across Enugu State.

Candidates and their supporters are likely to intensify consultations, meetings and mobilisation efforts as the election approaches.

Political parties will also be looking to strengthen their structures across the state’s local government areas.

The campaign period is expected to provide voters with opportunities to hear directly from the candidates and compare their plans for the state.

Issues affecting residents are likely to dominate the political conversation as the candidates seek to win public support.

What the 2027 Election Means for Enugu

The governorship election will determine who occupies the Enugu State Government House for the next term.

For Mbah, victory would give him another opportunity to continue implementing his administration’s agenda.

For the 14 challengers, defeating the incumbent would represent a major political breakthrough and bring a new administration to the state.

The election is therefore expected to attract considerable attention within Enugu and across the South-East.

As political activities increase, voters will have the opportunity to assess the candidates, their parties and their respective plans before making their choice.

Election Battle Begins

The emergence of the 15-candidate field has effectively set the stage for a competitive governorship contest in Enugu State.

Governor Peter Mbah will be seeking to retain the office, while the 14 opposition candidates will be working to persuade voters to choose a different candidate.

As the 2027 election draws closer, issues surrounding development, governance and the future direction of Enugu are expected to dominate political discussions.

For now, the focus will shift to the campaigns, policy proposals and mobilisation efforts of the various candidates.

With 15 candidates officially listed, the Enugu governorship race is already shaping up as one of the closely watched political contests ahead of the 2027 elections.
