Nollywood has been thrown into mourning following the death of actress Atinuke Remilekun Kareem, popularly known as Atinuke Kareem.
The actress died on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, after a prolonged battle with breast cancer.
Her death was announced by Owolabi Ajasa, the Executive Governor of the Ogun State chapter of the Theatre Arts and Motion Pictures Practitioners Association of Nigeria (TAMPAN), through a statement shared on social media.
Atinuke Kareem Had Sought Help During Cancer Battle
Before her death, Atinuke Kareem had publicly appealed to Nigerians for financial assistance and prayers as she continued treatment for breast cancer.
In a video shared alongside the announcement of her death, the actress spoke about the financial burden her illness had placed on her family.
She explained that her family had already spent a significant amount on her treatment and that TAMPAN had also supported her, but more assistance was still needed.
Kareem also revealed that she had two young children and appealed to members of the public to support her treatment.
Despite the efforts of her family, colleagues, fans and well-wishers, the actress eventually succumbed to the illness.
TAMPAN Mourns Atinuke Kareem
In its statement, TAMPAN Ogun State expressed appreciation to everyone who supported Kareem during her illness.
The association thanked individuals who contributed financially, offered prayers and provided encouragement to the actress and her family throughout her medical battle.
TAMPAN said the support meant a great deal to Kareem, her family and her colleagues.
However, the association confirmed that Atinuke had passed away despite the collective efforts and prayers for her recovery.
The group also condoled with her family, colleagues and loved ones while praying for them to find strength during the difficult period.
Nollywood Mourns Another Loss
Atinuke Kareem’s death comes at a difficult time for the Yoruba movie industry, which is still mourning the recent death of veteran actor Taiwo Hassan, popularly known as Ogogo.
The veteran actor also died following a battle with cancer, adding to the grief within the Nigerian entertainment industry.
Kareem’s passing has since prompted mourning among colleagues, fans and other members of the Nollywood community, with many expressing sadness over the loss of the actress.
Her death is another reminder of the difficult health battles faced by many people and the importance of support for patients and their families during prolonged illnesses.
