An 18-year-old man has been arrested in France over an alleged criminal plot that reportedly targeted Real Madrid and France star Kylian Mbappe.
According to French newspaper Le Parisien, the suspect, identified as Clément L., was placed under investigation alongside an alleged accomplice on August 21 in Nanterre.
Investigators reportedly suspect that the teenager was involved in a series of planned attacks, home invasions and kidnapping plots carried out or prepared between April 11 and August 19 in several locations across France.
Mbappe was reportedly among 26 people identified as potential targets. The list allegedly included footballers, rappers, businesspeople and other wealthy individuals.
Authorities reportedly discovered information about the potential targets after examining mobile phones connected to the suspect. Mbappe was allegedly described by the group as a particularly wealthy target.
The investigation reportedly began after an incident involving a watchmaker in Neuilly-sur-Seine. Police subsequently traced connections between the robbery investigation and the wider alleged criminal network.
Le Parisien reports that Clément L. was already in custody at Villepinte prison over separate allegations involving organised robbery and pimping. Investigators believe he allegedly continued coordinating criminal activities while in custody.
The suspect is said to have used the alias “Lester Z” and allegedly communicated with members of the network through Snapchat.
Clément L. has reportedly denied being responsible for all the alleged operations, claiming during questioning that his role was limited to acting as an intermediary.
He has since been placed in pre-trial detention and isolation while investigations continue.
The alleged plot involving Mbappe did not result in the footballer’s kidnapping. The Real Madrid forward has continued his football career and remains one of the most prominent figures in world football.
The investigation is ongoing, and the allegations against the suspect have not been established as fact in court.
